Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is engaged in final negotiations to offload a portion of his shareholding in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

The deal estimates the Mercedes team at £4.6bn – an unprecedented figure for an F1 team – after McLaren were valued at £3.5bn in a change of ownership structure last September.

Wolff, who owns one-third of Mercedes F1, plans to divest a shareholding in the region of 5%.

The 53-year-old would stay on as team boss and CEO if the sale goes through.

Ownership Breakdown

The other shareholders in the team are Mercedes and industrial group Ineos, who each also own one-third of the company.

A Mercedes spokesperson stated: "We will be making no comment on the matter. The management structure of the team will remain unaltered, and each shareholder are dedicated to the ongoing success of Mercedes-Benz in Formula One."

Financial Increase

This arrangement would represent a significant increase in value of the Mercedes team after Ineos bought its stake for £208 million in 2022.

This surge demonstrates the growth in valuations of F1 teams recently as a consequence of the increasing appeal of Formula 1 globally.

This was also seen in the success of the F1 movie featuring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which debuted in summer 2023 and has grossed more than $630 million (£458 million) at cinemas worldwide.

The film represents the actor's top-grossing film and the highest-earning sports film to date.

Current Standings

The Mercedes team are runner-up in the team standings, trailing McLaren, with three Grands Prix left in the current championship.

Mercedes' primary racer George Russell has won two of the 21 races so far and is fourth in the drivers' championship after McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

The team won a record eight consecutive team titles and seven drivers' titles, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, from 2014 to 2021.
