Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the count of new jobs created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release once the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
