British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the British defence ministry.

The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of access tunnels down to the facility... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their valour," Healey added. "They were part of thousands of British troops on duty over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our security, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
